The third digital revolution arrives: the internet of the senses

The Mobile World Congress updates its expectations upwards and expects to receive nearly 85,000 visitors in the edition that begins today, who will be attracted by the more than two thousand exhibitors that the fair will have. Figures that show that the most important mobile phone event in the world is practically at pre-pandemic levels. Something that John Hoffman, the CEO of the GSMA, warned this weekend at a press conference. “Probably, we will be closer to the 400 million economic impact”, rather than the 350 expected, assured the person in charge of the MWC from the top of the Torre Glòries in the city. At the same time, the CEO of Mobile World Capital, Francesc Fajula, noted the assets that are achieved at the fair and celebrated the economic legacy that professionals linked to Mobile leave in the local ecosystem. "Business is done inside and outside of Congress, which is why it is a very powerful dynamic," he said.

And with the big numbers, the big news comes to the world event. In this edition, the Mobile World Congress is expected to consolidate the development of 5G technology and lay the foundations for the sixth generation of connectivity on the horizon. Meanwhile, we will see how robotics -in fields as complex as surgery- take advantage of the low latency of the new mobile networks to carry out interventions with maximum precision.

As for mobile devices, we will see how folding terminals are gaining ground and capturing the attention of the general public, as well as the new models from the main manufacturers are implementing increasingly faster charges for their users. The contest also becomes a kind of competition between device producers to determine which prototypes have the best next-generation cameras.

And among the most attractive items, the Mobile World Capital will give an account of the third digital revolution that we are experiencing. After the consolidation of the internet of the PC, the internet of the mobile and everything that was derived from social networks, “now comes the internet of the senses”, explains Francesc Fajula. “It is a much more immersive reality, where we will see how augmented reality, virtual reality and artificial intelligence interact to give us experiences that until now we could not even dream of”, he adds. To do this, they have created a common thread called "Feel the technology", which is based on the fact that, through the five senses of the human being, you can experience multiple sensations that are between reality and the virtual world.

Fajula gives an example of the experience that putting on a pair of glasses and entering the Olympic Stadium would entail in July 1992, when the goalkeeper Antonio Rebollo, during the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Olympic Games, shot the arrow into the cauldron. “We will feel the atmosphere of the stadium, the music and we will feel the pressure of the bowstring”, he comments.
