The Tarragona Water Consortium installs 1,902 solar panels in Constantí

The Water Consortium of Tarragona opened this Tuesday a new photovoltaic installation at its headquarters in Constantí. There are 1,902 panels that will provide 17.7% of the energy consumed in this equipment.

This is the first phase of a project that the CAT is carrying out with the help of Endesa, which has assumed the 5.6 MEUR cost and will carry out its maintenance for a period of ten years, during which it will recover the investment.

The second phase will be carried out at the L'Ampolla facilities (Baix Ebre) where another 6,600 solar panels are scheduled to be commissioned in September.

The goal of the consortium is to generate 15% of the energy consumed in all its activities from renewable sources in 2026.

The president of the CAT, Joan Alginet, has pointed out that the consortium wants to allocate a good part of the roofs "for energy use."

When the L'Ampolla photovoltaic installation is operational, the entity's self-production will be 10.2%, "still far from 15%, but committed when we get there," said Alginet.

However, the one that was launched this Tuesday is the photovoltaic equipment "of a greater hydraulic infrastructure of the State", he highlighted.

The Constantí panels will produce 1,610 megawatt hours annually, a production equivalent to the average domestic consumption of about 340 homes, occupying an area of 9,200 square meters.

From Endesa, its director in Catalonia, Enric Brazís, has pointed out that "the CAT is a pioneer in developing a collaborative tender" on the path to decarbonization.

The chosen model allows Endesa to recover the investment with the consortium's electricity bill for the next ten years. After this period, the facility will become the property of the entity, which will be able to exploit it directly.

Furthermore, the electricity company already provides the energy consumed by the CAT and which is 100% green, he highlighted.
