The Sputniks of Sant Adrià de Besòs

This photograph with reflections of the Three Chimneys of Sant Adrià de Besòs, which I share in La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos, has inspired me to title it Sputniks.

The Sputnik 1 spacecraft was the first successful attempt to put an artificial satellite into orbit around the Earth. It was launched on October 4, 1957 by the Soviet Union. And the shape of the chimneys reminded me of these artifacts.

Sant Adrià, located at the mouth of the Besòs river, between Barcelona, Badalona and Santa Coloma de Gramanet, has as a great visual reference point this structure built very close to the sea.

This is the old Tres Chimeneas thermal power station, which was a conventional cycle thermoelectric installation located on the left bank of the mouth of the Besòs.

It consisted of three thermal groups of 350 MW each. Owned by Fecsa-Endesa, it was operational between 1973 and 2011.
