The Romanesque treasure in La Vall d’Ora

In La Vall d'Ora we can discover a treasure of Romanesque architecture, the tiny monastery of Sant Pere de Graudescales, portrayed inside and out in La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos.

This charming sanctuary in the middle of nature was created to be a Benedictine house transformed into a canonical one, "of which only a few vestiges are preserved", according to Turisme del Solsonès. The monastery was consecrated in the year 913 and in 960 it was established as the center of the Benedictines.

It is located next to the Aigua d'Ora river, a tributary of the Cardener, on the slopes of the Busa mountain range, in the middle of a splendid landscape, as can be seen in the photographs.

The current church dates back to the 12th century and is considered Lombard Romanesque style. It consists of a single nave with a Latin cross plan. The nave and transept are covered with semicircular barrel vaults, of equal height and perpendicular to each other, with three semicircular apses.

The floor plan of the building is a Greek cross. The opening of a cross-shaped window in one of the walls of the church stands out, a temple that was declared a cultural asset of national interest.
