The residents of the cracked block on Canigó Street will not be able to return until some works are done

The mayor of Badalona (Barcelonès Nord), Xavier García Albiol, explained this Thursday that the residents evicted yesterday from one of the buildings adjacent to the one that collapsed last week on Canigó street, in which three people died, will not be able to return. until some works are carried out.

The mayor explained that in the meeting he had with the neighbors last night at 9:00 p.m. he told them that "they cannot enter to live in their apartments until a series of works are carried out to guarantee that this block is safe."

The residents of number 7 Canigó Street in Badalona had to be evacuated yesterday after cracks appeared in some floors, a week after the building at number 9 partially collapsed and three people died buried in the rubble.

Albiol has stated that from now on they will work together with the neighbors and the Generalitat to try to ensure that they can return to their homes as soon as possible. Furthermore, he has indicated that "it is evident that there is a risk of the cracked building collapsing again," and has expressed that the neighbors will enter "today in an orderly manner to remove personal belongings."

The mayor explained that the floors that have been propped up are "those in the upper part", which are the most affected by the cracks. As for the residents of number 11, the other building adjacent to the one that collapsed last week, they have said that they are staying "at home for the moment."

Furthermore, he recalled the request to the Generalitat for the constitution of a table to address the problem of Canigó Street, where there are nearly 420 homes built from the same development as the building that sank and the one that has now cracked.

Asked if they should rethink the technical inspections of buildings (ITE), he stated that "I don't know if they have to be rethought or not", although he stated that some properties, due to their age and construction conditions, should have "a review deeper".
