The world-leading cava of the Brut Nature Gran Reserva, the Reserva de la Familia de Juvé

Wine Spectator executive editor Jeffrey Lindenmuth explained, “Our list is a broad snapshot of the year in wine, and we're thrilled to share our top picks, including established winemakers and new winners.” Through blind tastings carried out by the editors, the 100 best brands of 2023 have been chosen from more than 9,200 wines. Their selections are based on four criteria: quality, value, availability and the ‘X factor’: “a relevant and captivating story behind the wine.”

Wine Specator's Top 100 Wines list has been published since 1988, showcasing the best of wine, the wineries worth keeping a close eye on in the future, and the producers and wines that excite its editors the most.

The cava of Juvé

The distinction for the Reserva de la Familia coincides with the year of the 50th vintage of a cava whose first bottles went on sale in 1976. Meritxell Juvé, CEO and fourth generation of Juvé

The Reserva de la Familia is made with the indigenous white varieties of Penedès xarel·lo, macabeo and parellada from its own vineyards planted in Espiells, Can Massana and La Cuscona. They are organically grown and harvested by hand. Around 70 different base wines are selected in its assembly, and its aging in the bottle with the lees in rhyme is extended for a space of more than 36 months in its centuries-old cellars in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia.

It is a Guarda Superior cava with a beautiful straw yellow color, with golden reflections. It exhibits a carbonic acid with small bubbles, which form a constant rosary and a perfect crown (initially). In the olfactory phase it shows notes that are reminiscent of fruit (fresh apple) and white flowers. All this in a bed of aromatic Mediterranean garrigue plants, such as rosemary.

It also exhibits notes of lightly toasted bread and dried fruits (almond) that show its 3 years of aging in rhyme in contact with its lees. In the mouth we find notes of dried fruits and fresh apple. It offers a good balance between body and acidity. It stands out for its dryness. He is serious and transparent with his origin. It is clean and pure, and its good overall acidity makes it refreshing and gives it depth. Furthermore, its interesting and marked final saline touch, which makes you salivate, transports you to its clay-calcareous vineyards. Its carbon is very well integrated.
