This morning it started to rain in Oviedo and it made news. It is, in fact, great news, the best possible in Asturias ravaged by forest fire. It would be even more so if the rainfall spread throughout the Principality, especially in the western third, the closest to Galicia, where the most difficult situations remain. And it is that in the report at 7 in the morning this Saturday the Asturian emergency service reported that there were 95 forest fires.
That hundred forest fires registered throughout the territory, although with greater virulence in the west, supposes the continuity of the infernal situation that was experienced in the Principality on Thursday and Friday. There were peaks of more than 120 active fires, under a strong, hotter southerly wind, which made the work of aerial means difficult, at a time of the year when, as the mountains hardly burn, extinguishing devices count with much less media than in summer.
In any case, the Asturian emergency service warned in that early report that the information will be reviewed throughout the morning. In this way it seems to imply that the actual total number of fires at this time could be lower. The 112 Asturias indicates a dozen fires in which extinction work is being concentrated to a greater extent, in which the Military Emergency Unit and members of the Xunta de Galicia participate in addition to community services. These outbreaks are located in the municipalities of Allende, Castrillón. Parres, Llanes, Villayón and Valdés. In the latter, whose capital is Luarca, the wave of fire is being the most affected and this morning it has four sources. In fact, the forward command post is going to move to this town hall.
At 9:18 in the morning this Saturday, La Nueva España, the Principality's main newspaper, reported in its coverage of the fire crisis that there was "good news!" In any case, although very complicated times have been experienced in the capital since Thursday, with the flames at the very gates of the city, on Mount Naranco and a neighborhood on its slopes, late on Friday afternoon the situation already had improved a lot.
The weather forecast is that the most effective uncontrolled firefighting service, the one that falls from the sky, will act in Asturias throughout the day, but discontinuously and with territorial differences, since it is expected that it will rain more in the eastern third, the one close to Cantabria, which is the least affected.
