The president of the National Institute of Statistics (INE) Juan Rodríguez Poo has presented his resignation to the Government on Monday night, according to the newspaper ABC and La Vanguardia has been able to confirm.
The resignation comes after the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, accused the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, of making a "flight forward", trying to control organizations such as Indra, the INE, or the Constitutional Court.
According to a statement from the Secretary of State for Communication tonight, the resignation is confined to a "reinforcement of the state statistical system with a legal reform and a new statute for the INE."
"The reforms promoted by the Government to reinforce and modernize the state Statistical System have reached a fundamental milestone with the approval in Parliament of a modification of the Law of the Public Statistical Function", indicates the Government.
The statement emphasizes that Rodríguez Poo has been the main driver of this transformation process since he was appointed in 2018.
His resignation occurs "for personal reasons," says the note, according to which a replacement is expected to be appointed in the coming weeks.
In recent times, several media have pointed out that his replacement could be the former Secretary of State for Social Security, Israel Arroyo, who left Escrivá's ministry last Tuesday. According to the official version, Arroyo has requested his reinstatement in his official position in the Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (Airef).
