The initiative 'Sponsor a forest rabbit' is born to improve the biodiversity of Pallars Jussà

With the aim of preserving and promoting the diversity of flora and fauna species in agricultural and forest environments, the Salvatgines entity has launched the campaign 'Sponsor a forest rabbit', 'Sponsor a quail' or 'Sponsor a nest box' .

In the Áspero de Gavet de la Conca area, in Pallars Jussà, is where the last three shelters have been built to improve the habitat of the forest rabbit and favor predators that have the rabbit as food.

Albert Cereza, from Salvatgines, explained that the density of the forest rabbit in Conca de Tremp is very low and "no one perceives it as a threat." The action has been carried out on municipal land where it has also been reforested and nest boxes have been placed to promote a micro-reserve.

The City Council commissioned the reforestation of the Áspero land in Gavet de la Conca and a hundred trees and bushes have been planted to create a small forest to benefit the bird community and turn it into a refuge and breeding area for everything balances out.

Cereza explained that the eagle owl is disappearing from Pallars Jussà, while in other areas of Catalonia it is growing and has spoken of the availability of rabbits as one of the possible causes.

With the construction of shelters we want to encourage breeding and form a small colony. When Cereza talks about a small colony, he does not talk about more than twenty specimens and has insisted that the rabbit of the Lleida plain has nothing to do with the forest rabbit, which is smaller and breeds much less and rarely lives next to the crop fields.

The idea of carrying out all these actions is to be able to teach the general public and schools how a farm is managed to improve its biodiversity and that they end up being more optimal areas for fauna.

The sponsorship campaign includes voluntary contributions or sponsorships ranging from 20 to 30 euros that are allocated to different reserves that Salvatgines has in Pallars Jussà.

By sponsoring an amphibian, the person collaborates with the restoration of an old irrigation pond, so that it can serve as a breeding area for amphibians.

By sponsoring a nest box, one is installed to benefit the population of barn owls, bats or forest bats. Sponsoring a quail promotes management techniques to encourage the presence of quail on a specific farm. And with each sponsorship of a rabbit, a forest rabbit will be released into a specific micro-reserve to enrich the ecosystem with this piece. Sponsorship is 30 euros and there are only ten available.
