I have captured for La Vanguardia Readers' Photos this snapshot of the Alcázar of Segovia on a rainy day, when its majesty is even more appreciated under the threatening sky.
It is, without a doubt, an imposing ancient building. As a curiosity, it inspired Disney for the castle in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It is one of the most famous medieval castles in the world.
The Alcázar has been a Roman fort, a medieval fortress, custodian of the royal treasure, prison, artillery college, military archive and place of historical meetings and celebrations in Spain, such as the last meeting with King Ferdinand the Catholic with Christopher Columbus or the wedding of Philip II and Anne of Austria.
The Alcázar has its origins at the beginning of the 12th century. It is one of the most visited monuments in Spain. 22 kings have passed through its rooms, as well as some of the most notable figures in history.
Its imposing profile rises majestically over the Eresma valley and is a symbol of the old city of Segovia, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
