The happy mating of Egyptian vultures

In this photograph in La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos I have captured a pair of Egyptian vultures happily mating, in Alinyà, Alt Urgell region.

The Egyptian vulture is the smallest of the vultures and is clearly declining, so it is good news that there are still couples wanting to expand their family.

Normally they visit us at the beginning of March to return again to the African continent at the end of September, each pair occupying the same territory year after year.

The Egyptian vulture is the smallest Old World vulture and is usually one of the last animals to taste the carrion it feeds on.

Everything that others throw away is used by the Egyptian vulture. It also swallows eggs, which it breaks by lifting them with its beak and throwing them against the rocks.
