The Government prepares to evacuate Spanish civilians from Sudan

The Government will send Spanish Air Force planes to Sudan to repatriate the Spanish civilians who are in that country, now plunged into chaos after six days of combat between the Army and the paramilitary Forces that has caused an authentic exodus from the capital , where they have been foreigners, including diplomats.

The Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, announced this afternoon, from Berlin, that the Government will evacuate Spanish civilians as soon as there are the minimum conditions to send a plane to pick them up, but stressed that "currently the circumstances in Sudan are combat intense", so it has not been possible to evacuate anyone for the moment.

The Foreign Minister assured that he is in contact with Defense so that "when a temporary window opens" a plane can be sent and "to be able to act quickly." In fact, Margarita Robles has already ordered a military plane to travel to the area, specifically to Djibouti, where Spain maintains a small military contingent within Operation Atalanta, from where they would leave for Khartoum as soon as there are minimal security guarantees. for evacuation.

According to Albares, the Ministry has already managed to "resupply our embassy and the ambassador's residence and reinforce the security of both buildings", since although the paramilitary forces declared a truce due to the end of Ramadan, the fighting has continued throughout the day from today.

The minister also informed that "We have begun the regrouping of the Spaniards", but stressed that despite the fact that they are trying, "it is very complicated due to the circumstances of intense combat." Among the actions carried out by the Spanish Government, Albares assured that they have managed to save, in another country, a Spanish citizen who was embarked on the Sudanese coast, and is in perfect condition.

According to the foreign minister, diplomatic personnel are in "constant contact with all citizens who we know are in Sudan", but he called on those who have not yet come into contact with the Embassy to do so, in order to evacuate them. when there is that opportunity.

According to the data provided by Albares, 60 Spaniards who are in Sudan and about 20 European and Latin American citizens have requested the evacuation, with whom they are also in contact to evacuate them as soon as possible.

The Foreign Minister expressed his confidence that "the time will come for a ceasefire to be able to evacuate citizens safely."
