The Government offers Spanish nationality to 94 exiled Nicaraguan opponents

The Spanish government announced in a statement this Friday that "it has extended to the last 94 Nicaraguan citizens whose nationality has been withdrawn, the offer of Spanish nationality."

This is how the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, explained it to the writer and politician Sergio Ramírez, who wrote a letter to the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez.

Among these 94 citizens are writers Sergio Ramírez and Gioconda Belli, as well as the auxiliary bishop of Managua, Silvio Báez.

This offer is in addition to the one made a few days ago to the 222 people expelled from Nicaragua and whose Nicaraguan nationality was withdrawn, to whom José Manuel Albares has already publicly offered to become nationalized as Spaniards.

"The Government congratulates itself on the decision to release 222 prisoners from Nicaraguan jails," said the minister at the time, adding that he also offered that Spain "welcome any other prisoner who is still in the same situation at this time as those who have just been released”.

"The proposal of the Spanish Government is extended to any citizen of Nicaragua who in the future may be left stateless due to the decisions of the government of Daniel Ortega," the letter concludes.
