The Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital, popularly known as Can Ruti, in Badalona (Barcelonès Nord) has reinforced its surgical capacity with the premiere of its second hybrid operating room, a space that allows operating, in a single space and practically simultaneously, both pathologies that require open surgery as well as others that can be performed non-invasively using endovascular surgery systems.
In this way, the new operating room with these characteristics will save many intra-hospital transfers of patients, with the consequent immediate benefit in terms of safety. In addition, it has software to perform endovascular operations that significantly reduces both the irradiation received by patients and professionals and the exposure to the contrast products necessary to perform the operations.
The new hybrid operating room is located on the second floor of the Hospital and is the second of this type, after a similar one opened five years ago and which began treating the majority of aortic aneurysms and, above all, ischemic pathology, that is, patients at risk of suffering amputations due to lack of blood supply.
The space is planned to be used, preferably, to perform cardiac interventions. In this sense, the Cardiac Surgery Service emphasizes that the hybrid model serves as support for better patient care, as well as for optimal use of spaces, by integrating all the image conditions and different equipment characteristics of a advanced surgery room. In fact, it should allow the surgeon to work in an environment with the best technology available, favoring the convergence of experience and manual skills with high-definition angiography imaging systems, becoming the tools of the future.
The space is also prepared to host activities related to Urology or Neurosurgery. This last service points out, for example, some advantages of having hybrid operating rooms for vascular neurosurgery: the reduction in surgical time, the reduction in average stay, the decrease in the number of reinterventions, the reduction of unnoticed complications and the overall improvement of the results of the treatment.
In summary, having this space allows the patient and their family to know, immediately and without additional procedures or waiting, that their pathology has been completely resolved.
For the Deputy Medical Director of the Hospital's Surgical Process, Jordi Garcia Linares, the premiere of this second hybrid operating room represents an important advance in the Hospital's commitment to excellence and technological development. "It is one more step to position the Hospital as a surgical reference in the most complex surgeries," he summarized.
This space reinforces one of the projects to expand and improve the facilities in which the Hospital has been immersed for months, precisely in the year in which the center celebrates its 40th anniversary: the expansion of the surgical blog.
Once the entire project has been developed - the works began in the summer and are progressing at a good pace to debut it this year - the block will have two hybrid operating rooms and six more state-of-the-art operating rooms, which will be added to the 20 currently existing, distributed over two floors. . All of this will be accompanied by new technologies - such as CBCT and more navigators in the operating room - and a robotic cluster area that will allow procedures to be carried out in the services that perform robotic surgery.
