The Foix reservoir attracts motorcyclists

The Foix reservoir is worth a visit and, furthermore, it is ideal to go there by motorcycle, as in my case when I took these photographs for La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos.

The Foix River, which has a length of 41 km and originates in the Sierra de la Llacuna, in L'Anoia, gives rise to this reservoir, located in the surroundings of Castellet and La Gornal, where the Penedès and the Garraf converge.

The main purpose of the reservoir was to irrigate agricultural fields, since it is one of the few wetland areas in this part of the region. However, its waters are not suitable for human consumption since they come from the Vilafranca del Penedès treatment plant.

The works on the Foix reservoir, which began in 1901, were an initiative of the irrigation community, after the enormous crisis caused by phylloxera in these vineyard lands at the end of the 19th century.

It was an attempt to replace dryland crops with irrigated ones. But it was not until 1928 when the dam was inaugurated, although work continued for a few more years.
