The fascinating Gothic troglodyte hermitage

In Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia we have visited the fascinating Gothic troglodyte hermitage of Sant Miquel de la Roca, in Crespià, in the region of Pla de l'Estany. It is also known as Sant Miquel del Portell.

This sanctuary is located inside a shelter on a cliff above the Fluvià River. It consists of two perpendicular naves, separated by an arch. The roof is barrel vaulted, supported by the same conglomerate stone.

The access door has a segmental arch, but shows signs of a semicircular arch made of limestone voussoirs. Inside there is a cistern.

This hermitage can be reached on foot from the church of Sant Bartomeu de Crespià (currently in ruins). From here you must follow a path to the Roca cliff, where you go down a path equipped with a railing. It is located in the Fluvià gorge near the Esponellà hydroelectric plant, on a cliff.

It is a Gothic-style religious building embedded in a rocky cliff. The temple is located at the top of the cliff, rising high above the Fluvià.

Possibly the location where this unique church was built corresponds to an ancient prehistoric settlement of great antiquity.
