The driver of the multiple hit-and-run in Berlin had a history of mental disorders

Last night's hypotheses are confirmed: the driver of the car that yesterday ran over a group of students in the capital, resulting in one fatality and 29 injuries, six of them seriously, acted deliberately and was known to have "psychological disorders". ".

The head of the Interior of the Berlin regional government, Iris Spranger, reported that, according to current information, the man, of Armenian origin and German nationalized in 2015, had suffered mental problems in the past.

He also had a police record for aggressive behavior and violent crimes, but there is no record of "relevant data" that points to activities or links with anti-constitutional organizations.

Spranger also insisted that no "confession" or letter announcing attacks was found in the car that caused the hit, contrary to what some media had reported, although there were posters and writings related to Turkey. According to Der Spiegel, these are posters alluding to the genocide of the Armenian people by Turkey.

The head of the Interior, of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), had already assured yesterday that the main thesis was that it was an intentional outrage, derived from the driver's mental disorders, although other avenues of investigation have not been ruled out so far.

The mayor of Berlin, Franziska Giffey, for her part, told the public broadcaster RBB Inforadio that the researchers are working to determine the context and if something else influenced it. They are also "trying ... to find out more about the partially misleading statements he's making," she added.

The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, also condemned last night the "brutal attack" that occurred in a busy commercial area of Berlin, whose fatal victim was a 51-year-old teacher who was visiting the capital with a group of about twenty students between 15 and 17 years old, fourteen of whom suffered injuries of varying degrees. Six of them are in a critical situation, along with another teacher. A total of 29 people were injured, including teenagers from the school group and other bystanders.

As a driver, he acted with a metallic gray Renault Clio, owned by his sister. According to the reconstruction of what happened, the man launched his vehicle against the school group, then returned to the road, traveled about 200 meters, to end up crashing into the window of a perfume shop. He tried to flee on foot, but was stopped by passers-by and detained shortly after by a police patrol.

The multiple attack occurred in the vicinity of the Breitscheidplatz, the central square where in December 2016 the Tunisian jihadist Anis Amri launched a stolen truck against a popular Christmas market and killed 13 people of various nationalities.
