The Urgell canal will begin this Friday, July 21, the second irrigation shift in the main canal to save the harvest of fruit trees, 15 days after the first shift.
The new shift will last ten days and the water will be distributed following a new pattern based on the area of trees to be irrigated, according to the General Community of Irrigators of Canals d'Urgell.
Fruit growers expect to carry out up to four irrigation shifts this summer with the extra supply of 50 cubic hectometres approved by the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (CHE) at the end of June.
The irrigators decided at the beginning of the month to save the harvest of the 9,300 hectares of fruit trees that supplies the canal in exchange for sacrificing 13,000 hectares of cereal and fodder.
