The commons reject talking about a national minority in the investiture negotiation

The commons do not agree with the concept of “national minority” that PSOE and Junts are negotiating to achieve an investiture agreement for the acting President of the Government Pedro Sánchez.

The concept, advanced by La Vanguardia, would be based on the identification of Catalonia as a national minority within the Spanish State, which would fit into the legal system of the European Union, but the common people do not like this definition: “We do not even like it. as a term or as a concept,” according to spokesperson Joan Mena, at a press conference this Monday.

For the training of Jéssica Albiach, this concept is “identitarian” and “does not recognize the Catalonia of a single people that we have always defended.” According to Mena, the national recognition of Catalonia is necessary from different points of view, but not from an exclusively identity point of view."

The spokesperson recalled that his party has already proposed bringing to the dialogue table the recognition of Catalonia as a nation, which in his opinion fits within the framework of a plurinational Spain. For this reason, Mena has called on the parties to reach an agreement that reflects that recognition.

The concept of a national minority within the Spanish State, on the other hand, is also not clear whether it has the approval of the Catalan socialists. This Sunday, the leader of the PSC, Salvador Illa, recalled that “the Statute and the Constitution are clear” in this regard. In fact, Catalan socialists defend, like the commoners, that Catalonia is a nation within a plurinational State.

The commons have also referred to another of the issues that are the protagonists of the negotiation, the election of a mediator to verify compliance with the agreements reached for the investiture. For Mena, this figure is not essential, although they are committed to finding a mechanism that fulfills the same functions, that is, the verification of compliance with the agreements.
