The Colomers dam reports the drought

In the Photos of the Readers of La Vanguardia we can see how the river Ter, with little water flow, passes through the Colomers dam, in the Baix Empordà, one more image that shows us the times of drought that we suffer in Catalonia.

This dam was the result of a project to improve irrigation in the Baix Ter, but, in the end, it has proven to be more effective as a cycling route. In 2003, a footbridge was built at the back for the passage of cycle tourists, within a Baix Ter route organized by the Baix Empordà County Council.

The dam was built in 1971 to replace the traditional locks in the lower course of the Ter (Ullà, Canet and Colomers) and to increase, with the new construction of two canals, the irrigated surface of the Baix Ter, as detailed by the Consortium of Ter.

However, this project was "stalled and paralyzed." In 2002, "the ACA studied using the dam as a pond to regulate the waters of Ter." It is built with large concrete blocks, with eight pillars and six large gates, which has a length of about 103 meters, with about six meters high above the river level and about twenty meters deep.

It has a storage capacity of 50,000 m3 and the potential for a maximum flow of 2,500 l/s, although with the drought these levels are not reached.
