The Civil Guard detains the driver of the deadly hit-and-run in Palma

The Civil Guard has arrested this Monday in Palma the driver of a vehicle who fatally ran over a woman and fled. The 30-year-old man has turned himself in and assures that he was not aware of the consequences of the hit-and-run until he read what had happened in the newspapers. The man has appeared this Monday before the Civil Guard to confess the facts in the company of his lawyer, according to Ultima Hora.

Agents of the Civil Guard and other police forces have been searching since Sunday for the driver of the powerful vehicle that fled after ramming a woman who was crossing a pedestrian crossing at high speed at 02:40 on Sunday. The woman died almost instantly as a result of the serious injuries caused by the collision.

The man was driving a large displacement vehicle at excessive speed. He ran a red light at the moment when the woman, a 36-year-old tourist, was crossing the road at a zebra crossing. The damage caused to the vehicle, especially to the glass and to the front of the car, show the violent impact suffered by the woman.

The vehicle sped away immediately, but there were several witnesses at the scene of the accident who gave details of the car to officers who arrived in the area. The agents had also reviewed security cameras at this point, very close to the Palacio de Congresos de Palma, right on the seafront of the Balearic capital.

As a result of the impact, the vehicle lost some of its parts, which would also have made it easier to identify the owner. Finally, after an intense search, the driver has decided to turn himself in. His lawyer agreed to deliver him in the parking lot of a hospital in Palma and from there they have moved to a rustic farm where the accident-caused car was located.

The man has been arrested for a crime against traffic safety and another for reckless homicide. In his statement, the man has insisted that he found out that he had killed the woman by reading the press. The arrested man makes a statement at the Palma Civil Guard Command and it is expected that this Monday he will go to court. The judge must decide if he releases him with charges and if he adopts other types of measures given the seriousness of what happened.
