The Ascó nuclear reactors are stopped due to a breakdown with the external evacuation lines

A breakdown in the external electrical network has caused the automatic shutdown of the two reactors of the Ascó nuclear power plant in the early hours of this Monday, as sources from the management company, ANAV, have confirmed to ACN.

The stoppage and disconnection occurred after the protections of the external energy evacuation lines tripped.

This is, as confirmed by the same sources, an incident very similar to the one suffered by the Vandellós II nuclear power plant, also managed by ANAV, on September 20.

As the management company later stated in a statement, the incident took place in Red Eléctrica's 380 kV electrical park. Unit II stopped automatically with six minutes left at three thirty in the morning and Unit I experienced the same incident when nine minutes past five.

ANAV has assured that both units have functioned as designed and the plants are now decoupled from the electrical grid and stable. The necessary checks are being carried out to synchronize both groups while Red Eléctrica works to resolve the anomalies, in coordination with the plant managers.

The incident, the managers highlighted, was reported to the Nuclear Safety Council and had no impact on the safety of the plant, people or the environment.
