The Aemet warns of an "unusual" change in temperatures in Spain to start August

The end of July and the beginning of August will be marked by contrasting temperatures: the first days of the week will be very warm, especially in the east of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands.

As reported by Aemet, the EFI index shows unusually high values in some areas between Monday and Wednesday.

The authorities recommend staying hydrated and avoiding sun exposure in the hottest hours of the day.

But as of Thursday, the arrival of a cold air mass for the season will give rise to about three days with unusually low temperatures for August in the north and east of the peninsula: on Friday, daytime values could be between 5 and 10 °C below normal.

Regarding the average temperatures in Spain in August in general and by autonomous communities in the last 20 years, a gradual increase has been observed throughout the national territory.

According to meteorological records, the national average has experienced an increase of approximately 1.5 °C in the last two decades.

However, the autonomous communities in the south and center, such as Andalusia, Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha, have experienced a slightly higher increase, close to 2 °C.

On the other hand, the northern regions, such as Galicia, Asturias, and the Basque Country, have experienced a more moderate increase of around 1 °C.

These trends worry scientists and authorities, who highlight the importance of taking measures to mitigate climate change and its effects on the Spanish climate.
