The 8-M is celebrated in Alicante with division between political groups

The local government of Alicante (PP) and the left-wing opposition (PSOE, Compromís and EU-Podem) have separately claimed International Women's Day this Friday with the display of two different banners in the town hall, offering an image of division minutes before an institutional event to which the Vox councilors have not attended.

The mayor, Luis Barcala, and the councilors of the popular group have displayed a banner on the balcony of the town hall with the legend '8M International Women's Day', both in Spanish and Valencian.

Meanwhile, the councilors of the socialist group, Compromís and EU-Podem have shown another banner with the motto 'Ens sobren els motius', on the sidewalk and in front of the doors of the Town Hall, just below the balcony, as seen in the image released by the PSPV.

In this way, the act of tribute and commitment to women's rights has made clear the differences that exist between the members of the municipal corporation. The socialist councilor Victoria Melgosa has justified the action of her party because "we are not going to be participants in the cynicism of the PP of Barcala, which is twinned with the extreme right."

In a statement, the PSPV representative denounced "that today they displayed a banner and took a photo while the rest of the year they violate women's rights."

The commemoration event continued inside the City Hall, where the councilor for Social Welfare and Civil Rights, Begoña León, highlighted that "gender equality has become a priority" in society and stated that, although, In his opinion, there is "progress in the right direction", citizens still face "numerous challenges."

For her part, Compromís councilor Sara Llobell has criticized the municipal government for still being in force with the Civic Coexistence Ordinance or for allowing, as she has denounced, the existence of a "covert anti-abortion office."

And the spokesperson for EEU-Podem, Manolo Copé, has claimed this "common front" of the opposition against, as he said, "an obvious policy against women" of the municipal government and has advocated the importance of making visible and ending with gender inequality.
