Tense third running of the bulls with at least one injured by a bull horn

The bulls from the Cebada Gago ranch had never run on a weekend, days of mass in Pamplona for San Fermín. For this reason, when seeing them scheduled for this third running of the bulls on a Sunday, the alerts were on due to their history. The tension has been palpable from the outset by some animals that, up to now, had caused 59 injuries from bull horns in 47 participations.

The provisional report offered by the Red Cross spokesman, José Aldaba, has been of at least five people who have requested their transfer to emergency hospital centers, one of them by bull horn. Two people have suffered bruises with deformity, both on the first slope of Santo Domingo and in the Estafeta area; the one injured by a pole took place in the area of Estafeta sur; and at least two people are being evaluated for injuries in the bullring, when the last two animals have entered, lagging behind during the tour.

From the Hospital of Navarra they have notified that the goring in the left arm has reached the conscious center and does not suffer serious affectations in vascular-nervous areas.

The herd has spread out a few meters after leaving the initial fence and, despite moments of tension, the race has been faster than on other occasions. The bulls have left the ring in two minutes 53 seconds.

With the herd divided, moments of tension have escalated at various points along the route. In some areas, inexperienced runners have caused dangerous moments with one of the lagging bulls. A fall of some participants near the Telefónica area, when taking the straight line that leads to the alley of the bullring, has generated a crowd of people on the ground, causing one of the bulls to fall on top of them. The collaboration of experienced runners has allowed the bull to continue his career and avoid greater danger.

On one of the days with the greatest risk in the Sanfermines —due to the number of people who crowd the streets and the history of gorings against the leading cattle ranch—, the health services prepared beforehand to attend to the numerous wounded. Up to a medical post every 50 meters of the 875-meter route from the Santo Domingo slope to the bullring, passing through the Town Hall, Mercaderes, Estafeta, the Telefónica curve and the entrance to the ring.

This Sunday is the fourth cattle ranch with the most confinements on their backs and the one that has dealt with the most bullfights. The bulls from the Herederos de Don José Cebada Gago ranch, from Cádiz, already had a reputation for being some of the toughest at these festivals, which have always led very long races. In the last 2022 edition, they caused three injuries from a bull horn, rising as the cattle ranch with the most gorings in its history: 59 in total in 47 confinements. On this occasion, the bulls weigh between 550 and 610 kilos.

Regarding the injured from the second confinement, the health services responsible for the Hospital de Navarra affirm that only one is still admitted, although there is no fear for his life, since the evolution of his state of health is very positive.
