Spain has been proclaimed world champion in the technical team modality in artistic swimming, in the World Cups that are being held in Fukuoka (Japan). It is the best result of Spanish swimming in the history of this discipline, considered the queen of artistic swimming.
This is the fifth metal won by the Spanish delegation in artistic swimming in these Fukuoka championships, after Fernando Díaz del Río's gold in the men's technical solo on Monday, Iris Tió's bronze (technical solo), silver in the mixed duet coach (Emma García and Dennis González) and the also bronze in the technical duo (Alisa Ozhogina and Iris Tió).
The team prepared by Mayuko Fujiki at the CAR in Sant Cugat del Vallès performed 'Ole Fukuoka' without mistakes, a mix of flamenco fusion and a popular Japanese song. She prevailed with a final score of 281 points against the teams of Italy (274) and the United States (273). Japan was left out of the podium (271).
Gold came with emotion in the final. The Spanish team, made up of Iris Tió, Alisa Ozhogina, Cristina Arambula, Marina García, Meritxell Mas, Paula Ramírez, Sara Saldaña and Blanca Toledano, had been sixth in the preliminary phase.
They were the penultimate to jump into the pool and achieved the best score (281.6893), with which they secured the bronze. The United States remained (6th in the previous World Cup) and Italy, who in their subsequent performances could not overcome Spain.
This is the third gold medal in a World Cup achieved by Spanish artistic swimming. The previous one was just yesterday, Monday, the one that Fernando Díaz del Río hung himself in the men's only coach final (the first in history, since the modality was released in the World Cup program).
The first in history for Spanish artistic swimming (then still called synchronized) was won by the free combo directed by Anna Tarrés at the 2009 World Cup in Rome, with Gemma Mengual, Ona Carbonell, Andrea Fuentes, Raquel Corral, Irina Rodríguez, Thais Henríquez, Margalida Crespi, Alba Cabello, Gisela Morón, and Paula Klamburg.
