Sánchez Flores, on the racist attack: "It is one thing to be a gypsy and another to be used as an insult"

A new and regrettable racist attack shook the Spanish League yesterday when Sevilla footballer Marcos Acuña and his coach Quique Sánchez Flores received serious insults from Getafe fans. Around the 60th minute of the game, some fans in the stands addressed the Argentine player calling him “monkey.” It was the footballer himself who warned referee Iglesias Villanueva of the situation, who, applying the protocol against racism, stopped the game for a few minutes while the loudspeaker asked the chants to stop.

Later, a part of the Getafe fans also called the Sevilla coach a gypsy. “It is one thing to be a gypsy and another thing to be used as a racist insult. It seems aberrant to me. Part of the public believes that they can come here and say whatever they want. This is happening in all stadiums in the world. “We come to work here and we have to be respected,” the coach demanded.

The referee of the match recorded in the minutes the insults received by Acuña: “In the 68th minute I had to stop the match because there were racist insults about Sevilla's number 19, with words like 'Acuña mono' and 'Acuña you come from the bun".

“If there is a chant here it should stop because that cannot be,” said Djené Dakonam, Getafe defender, after the game. Sergio Ramos was also forceful about what he experienced. “We have been demanding respect, that they do not come to free themselves and say nonsense. We must clean up the image of football,” he requested.
