The Minister of Youth and Children, Sira Rego, has announced her candidacy to be general coordinator of Izquierda Unida (IU), which will hold a federal assembly on May 18 and 19 in search of new leadership after the departure of Alberto Garzón , as well as to renew its political proposal. "Today I present my candidacy for the Federal Coordination of Izquierda Unida. I want to ask for your support to build a brave and combative UI," the minister announced in a message on the social network right to vote for the new leadership to open a new stage in the party.
The message is accompanied by a video in which Rego maintains that, "to continue advancing rights", we need an UI that can "be a reference in the institutions" without "locking itself in palaces." He also defends that to get out of one of the "darkest" stages since the Second World War, "the courage of those who opt for bridges instead of walls" is needed.
Rego's announcement has not been well received in some circles of Izquierda Unida as evidenced by its federal co-spokesperson, Amanda Meyer, who through Twitter has regretted that this decision implies "the renunciation of the agreement to have the best direction, the most representative and the most cohesive to lead Izquierda Unida. We have been working for many months to achieve maximum unity around politics.
Since the convening of the assembly process, the current IU Executive stated that she was going to work to achieve a political proposal and candidacy for the Executive of the party "by consensus", although the presentation of alternative proposals was also going to be facilitated until next 29 April as only the endorsement of 2% of the IU bases is required.
Thus, the message from Meyer, leader of the federal leadership and also of the PCE, has disfigured Rego, who with his decision to run has no longer gone in the direction of sealing a consensus for the new executive.
