Silent digital revolution: the best technology is the one we don't see

History has changed a lot in just a few decades thanks to technology. Consider reporting a car hit to insurance. We have gone from calling by phone, writing an email or communicating via the app. And in the future it will be the vehicle itself that does the paperwork, even driving itself to the workshop thanks to autonomous technology.

There is a key that will make it possible, 5G. "Companies are already taking advantage of it and are inventing new business models: not only do the same things more efficiently, but they also generate new things and that results in something positive for the user," says researcher Pablo Foncillas.

Burning stages we are going from digitization -converting what is already done with digital tools, such as a contact agenda-; digitization -changing the way of working to everything online, such as reporting to an insurance company from a platform- and digital transformation -the current stage-.

What does the last phase entail? "It is a very significant change. It changes what we do and, therefore, also what we do," says Foncillas. For example, the same insurer we are talking about collects data on its clients and accidents and can transfer it to car manufacturers so that they can discover weak points in their designs. "This model could be very beneficial for countless sectors," believes the expert. From food to banking, through health or retail.

"The important thing is to realize that all this has only been possible thanks to the mature technological state in which we find ourselves: from data centers to fixed infrastructure, but of course, with 5G as the facilitator of all this, the one that allows link the various elements of digitization", highlights the professor.

Concluding, what world will we find? "Until now, the borders that delimited the different economic sectors were very clear and well marked. Companies did not compete in other industries that were not their own, but now things are changing. Now it is happening and it will go further" .
