Sierra Nevada reopens after suffering a mud flood that destroyed several ski slopes

Normality is returning, little by little, to the Sierra Nevada after a river of mud devastated the slopes of Maribel, Zaragatillo and the final stretch of El Río during the day on Monday, a day in which, due to meteorological reasons, the station it remained closed. With this, what could have been a real disaster was avoided, since only the activities that were being carried out in the Mirlo Blanco complex had to be suspended.

As explained by Cetursa, the company that manages the station, the rains recorded since Sunday, accompanied by high temperatures, were what generated the flow of water, snow and mud from the well-known Morón Glacier (Cauchiles-Parador area, in the south face), which covered several points of the Sierra in brown.

Today, according to the daily report, and after hours of intense work by the train drivers, Sierra Nevada will open with almost 20 skiable kilometers spread over 29 slopes, according to sources consulted by this newspaper, and it will do so depending on the reconditioning work. Of course, the one in El Río will only be open up to Ts Stadium.

The images of the flood are impressive. A flow of mud colored the white slopes of the Sierra brown. The users who had come here yesterday to participate in the activities that were authorized in Mirlo Blanco were very scared, although they were able to get to safety without much difficulty.

The intense rains and high temperatures caused the thaw that caused the flow of water to overflow the possibilities of the drainage pipe. Fortunately, Cetursa had been forced not to open its doors that same Monday due to inclement weather.

Today, however, ski lovers return to the snow. In addition to the slopes that have already been opened, and that will be added as the cleaning work progresses, the station will activate two gondolas, five chairlifts and three carpets to access the open areas, which have up to 70 kilometers of thickness of wet snow. .
