Shakira, from the stage to the dock

Shakira faces a trial this Monday in the Barcelona Court accused of defrauding the Treasury between 2012 and 2014. The Prosecutor's Office is asking for a very high sentence of eight years and two months in prison and a fine of 23.8 million euros. The accusation considers that during that period the Colombian singer lived in Spain with Gerard Piqué and her first child, and she had to pay income and estate taxes in Spain. Instead, the artist argues that she did not live here but rather that her habitual place of residence was the Bahamas where she fulfilled her tax obligations. After the opening of the judicial procedure, Shakira paid the payment demanded of her plus her interests. In total, 23 million euros that she has not served to close the case. The Prosecutor's Office considers that she had a fraudulent intention and continued with the legal case until she was put on the bench. If a last-minute agreement between defense and prosecution does not remedy it, Shakira will be tried starting this Monday by a court in the Barcelona Court. The Colombian singer will only attend the first session and then has permission to be absent from the rest of the sessions.
