Seven dead and 15 injured in a suicide attack on a mosque in Afghanistan

At least seven people have been killed and 15 others injured in a suicide attack on a mosque in northern Afghanistan, specifically in Baghlan province, in the city of Pol-e-Khomri.

The explosion has been confirmed by the director of the Baghlan Department of Culture and Information, Mustafa Hashemi, to the Afghan network Tolo News. Later, the provincial police spokesman, Shir Ahmad Burhani, detailed that the attack took place during collective midday prayers, against a mosque of the Shiite minority.

An eyewitness has said that the suicide bomber detonated his explosives when the prayer place was very crowded. Furthermore, the witness has stated that the windows of the mosque have been broken and that a part has been destroyed, leaving the walls splattered with blood. At the moment no insurgent organization has claimed the attack.

Since the Taliban came to power in August 2021, the Islamic State (IS) of Khorasan, the Afghan branch of the terrorist group, has emerged as the main threat to the stability of the country, claiming responsibility for multiple attacks against places of worship.

Although the Afghan Government denies that this terrorist group represents a threat to national security, the Taliban have led operations with the aim of dismantling the jihadists and materializing the security promises they made before coming to power, when they assured that the areas under their control they were free of terrorism and crime.
