Sant Jordi will close a large part of the center of Barcelona to traffic

The Sant Jordi superblock, which is growing this year, will entail important changes in the mobility of a large part of the center of Barcelona. This pedestrian island, located between Diagonal, Gran Via, Balmes and Pau Claris. It also extends in Ciutat Vella, along the Rambla, and in Gràcia, along Gran de Gràcia.

The recovery of the Rambla, a space that is symbolic of this festivity and that was lost with the covid, and the expansion to Gran de Gràcia, will make it possible to add 10% of space to the book and rose stalls, with the intention that you can walk around and look at books with relative peace of mind, contrary to other years when the density of buyers was very high.

Given the large number of streets that will have restricted circulation due to the installation of book and rose stops, Barcelona City Council recommends moving around the affected area mainly on foot or by public transport, prioritizing the metro and the train and that they be planned displacement.

The Urban Guard has planned a service device aimed at guaranteeing civility, road safety and to carry out the corresponding traffic cuts during the celebration of this festivity, which expects a massive influx. Thus, the circulation of vehicles will be prohibited from this Saturday night, at 11:00 p.m., and until two o'clock on Monday morning in the central space of the Eixample superblock.

This restriction affects Paseo de Gràcia (central and side streets both sides), from Plaza Catalunya (mountain side) to Diagonal; on Rambla Catalunya (laterals both sides), from Gran Via to Diagonal; on Calle Casp, from Paseo de Gràcia to Pau Claris; in Diputació, from Paseo de Gràcia to Balmes; in Consell de Cent, from Balmes to Pau Claris; in Mallorca, from Pau Claris to Balmes; in Provence, from Pau Claris to Balmes; in Rosselló, from Balmes to Paseo de Gràcia; and in Corsica, from the Diagonal to the Rambla Catalunya.

In addition to the closure of the superblock to traffic, traffic on the Llobregat road in Plaza Catalunya will be restricted to one lane at night at the same time as the closure of the superblock. Throughout the day on Sunday, this road will be isolated from Plaza Catalunya from the moment its use for pedestrians makes it necessary for reasons of road safety. Exit from the public car park located on Calzada Llobregat from Plaça Catalunya, Besòs side, towards Ronda Universitat will be facilitated.

If traffic circumstances allow it, the cutting of the central road of Paseo de Gràcia between Aragó and Diagonal may be brought forward to ten o'clock tonight to facilitate the assembly of the facilities. The transversal roads will remain expedited until 11:00 p.m., at which time the total cut of the superblock is scheduled.

In the same context, during the celebration of the Sant Jordi Day, on Sunday, the roads that lead to the perimeter of the superblock may affect mobility depending on the crowd of attendees and the use of the roads. Likewise, there may be specific effects on the roads that lead to La Rambla.

Parking of vehicles is prohibited from tonight at ten o'clock until Sunday at 11:00 p.m. on La Rambla (Llobregat road), from Carme del Carme to Sant Pau, and on Besòs road, from Portaferrissa to Ferran. Nor will it be allowed from this Saturday morning, at 8:00 a.m. and until 2:00 a.m. on Monday, on Paseo de Gràcia (central and lateral roads, both roads), from Ronda Sant Pere to Diagonal (even motorcycles on the sidewalk); Rambla Catalunya (both side roads), from Gran Via to Diagonal (no motorcycles on the sidewalk either); and in Casp from Passeig de Gràcia to Pau Claris Provincial Council from Passeig de Gràcia to Balmes; Consell de Cent from Balmes to Pau Claris; Mallorca from Pau Claris to Balmes; Provença from Pau Claris to Balmes; Rosselló from Balmes to Passeig de Gràcia. In all of them on both sides, even chamfers and motorcycles to do; and in Còrsega from Rambla Catalunya to Diagonal (both sides and corner Rambla Catalunya Besòs sea and Besòs mountain; even motorcycles on the sidewalk).

Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) will reinforce the metro and bus services. In the case of the metro, on lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 11, all of them will have more trains than usual in order to increase the frequency of passage. The reinforcement will take place throughout the day, especially on lines 1, 3 and 4, where it is expected that there will be more users on the occasion of Sant Jordi. In the afternoon rush hour, from 5 to 9 p.m., there will be 31% more circulation than on a normal Sunday. The number of customer service agents and security guards will also be increased.

To facilitate mobility, the bus offer will also be increased with more vehicles in service and with more capacity cars assigned to the following lines: D20, H12, H16, V13, V17, V19, V21, V27, V29, 6, 22, 24, 34, 47 and 111. In addition, the routes of the bus lines affected by the superblock will be adapted. The bus lines affected will be: D50, H10, V13, V15, V17, 7, 19, 22, 24, 54, 59 and the blue and red routes of Barcelona Bus Turístic.
