Rivert, the medieval town emerged from the rocks

In the Photos of the Readers of La Vanguardia we can appreciate the communion between the houses and the rocks in Rivert, in the Pallars Jussà. The town, with a marked medieval character, descends from the rock that serves as its canopy.

The core was developed using the rock caves to which older buildings adapt. Despite the passage of centuries and modernization, Rivert maintains all the air of antiquity that accompanies the visitor when they walk through its streets.

Rivert is a population entity belonging to the municipality of Conca de Dalt. The place name has been known since 923. At the end of the 10th century it constituted a distinct territory and, in 1831, it was property of the Marquises of Sentmenat.

Currently, the oldest part closest to the castle hill is in ruins. The parish church, of Romanesque origin with remains of paintings, is quite modified.

The current town was possibly formed between the 14th and 15th centuries with a suburb or outer neighborhood on the route of the road to Salàs del Pallars, as detailed by the Conca de Dalt Town Hall.

One of the main attractions of the center of Rivert are the abundant natural springs, which come out of the rock and have great purity. This is demonstrated by the significant number of Pyrenean newts, an endangered species, that live in their very clean water habitats.
