Puigdemont replies to Díaz that the conditions are set by Junts per Catalunya

That Junts por Catalunya remains firm in defending unilateralism and considers it as one of the options for independence is making it extremely difficult for the incumbent Government to approach Carles Puigdemont. That is why Yolanda Díaz, leader of Sumar and second vice president of the central Executive, has demanded that he withdraw all appeals to this route today in an interview in La Vanguardia if he wants to make effective this “historic pact” that includes the amnesty and the that the former president appealed. Puigdemont replied this Sunday: “The conditions are not set by those who ask for help.”

“I think someone is confused. “We are not the ones who need support to go to the investiture,” stated the leader of JxCat in a tweet where he does not expressly mention the unilateral route.

Díaz met with the former president of the Generalitat on September 4 in a room of the European Parliament. The leader assures in the interview with this newspaper that Puigdemont spoke to her about this historic pact that the independence party intends to have with the PSOE and Sumar. An adjective to commitment that Díaz also adds without complexes. A day after the meeting, the former head of the Government explained his conditions for an investiture of Pedro Sánchez.

But the leader of Sumar's ranks is clear that to reach any agreement some resignations on the part of Junts are necessary. They were assumed by Oriol Junqueras, president of ERC, a few days before the pardons were issued in June 2021. “We know that other avenues are neither viable nor desirable to the extent that they distance us from the objective to be achieved,” said the Republican at that time to reject unilateralism and opt for negotiation.

“The agreement has to be broad and allow me to tell you that unilaterality does not fit in this agreement,” Díaz stressed in the interview before adding that in fact “when a party sits down to negotiate it is already renouncing unilaterality.”

However, Junts has repeatedly assured that it does not plan to give up this route. He did so, for example, a few days ago, during the Onze de Setembre in a manifesto: "Junts maintains the legitimacy of 1-O and has not and will not renounce unilaterality as a legitimate resource to assert its rights." Puigdemont also reacted by brandishing the unilaterality of the ruling against the prison sentence of the former Minister of the Interior Miquel Buch and the bodyguard Lluís Escolà, when he pointed out that he will never reject it because he distrusts "the Spanish State."

In short, for the post-convergents it is the basic card that allows them to negotiate with the PSOE and Sumar. The general secretary of JxCat, Jordi Turull, was more drastic than the text and stressed that same day that abandoning that path would be "giving up on the nation."
