Pontón and Besteiro avoid committing to a coalition government in the TVE debate

The last debate of the Galician electoral campaign held on Spanish Television tonight had a protagonist, the current president of the Xunta and PP candidate, Alfonso Rueda, who resigned from participating. The program has thus become a kind of dialogue between the two leaders of the opposition parties represented in the current Galician Parliament, Ana Pontón, of the Nationalist Bloc and José Ramón Gómez Besteiro of the Socialist Party of Galicia, who have constantly made reference to the “absent candidate”.

The most anticipated moment of this debate was the time dedicated to the pacts. Throughout the campaign, the eventual agreement between the two left-wing parties to unseat the PP in the event that it loses its absolute majority has been something like the elephant in the room.

But finally, tonight they have not revealed their intentions either and both leaders have avoided committing to a government agreement pending the results of next Sunday's elections. “It is the voters who must say what coalitions we can form,” said Pontón. Besteiro's response, to questions from the moderator, Xavier Fortes, has been similar "we are going towards a government of progress, but first the Galicians have to speak"
