Pilot test with 14 smart containers in Reus to improve selective collection

This Tuesday, Reus City Council began a pilot test to improve selective collection rates and go from 40% in 2022 to 55% before 2025, as established by European regulations.

In total, fourteen waste and organic containers have been installed, distributed in four neighborhoods of the city - Mas Carpa, Chalets Quintana, Sant Joan and Blancafort - and with different technological systems, to choose the most appropriate one.

As detailed by the Councilor for Public Roads, Daniel Marcos, "citizens' habits will not change, but they will simply have to carry a mobile device or an identification card" to open them. Marcos has also celebrated that the initiative will allow the implementation of a fairer garbage rate in the future.

Marcos has stressed that Reus paid 3.5 million euros just for the fraction of remains in 2022. An amount that has a direct impact on the pockets of all citizens, whether they recycle well or not. For this reason, one of the objectives pursued by the City Council with the incorporation of these new smart containers is to work towards the implementation of a fairer rate. "He who recycles more, pays less," summarized the Councilor for Public Roads.

Marcos has stated that this is a pilot test, with no expiration date, that allows us to know which of the four technologies works best in the city. In this sense, he said that the Mas Carpa, Xalets Quintana, Sant Joan and Blancafort neighborhoods have been chosen, where about 400 people reside, since "they are very concentrated areas, with few islands of containers and with good selective collection rates." .

Whatever the model, the operation when disposing of garbage will be the same. Neighbors will have to bring their identification card or a mobile device with the corresponding application to the reader that the rest and organic containers already include. By doing so, the lid will open and allow garbage to be deposited.

During the first fifteen days, a technical team will visit these four areas to report on the launch of the new service and resolve any incidents or questions that may arise. In addition, Reus City Council will implement a reinforcement of the container review service to prevent any incident or uncivil act from occurring.
