Parents of an infant who was admitted to a hospital with multiple fractures arrested

National Police agents in Palma have arrested the parents of a baby who is only 7 weeks old after doctors at a hospital detected multiple broken bones and injuries that were apparently caused as a result of mistreatment by one or both parents. The doctors immediately notified the Police since the baby's injuries are compatible with what is known as 'shaken baby syndrome'.

The Police report in a statement that they became aware of the incident when the infant was urgently admitted to a hospital in Palma. He had multiple fractures in different states and his prognosis was serious. The health services reported what happened to the Court of Guard and the National Police, as established by protocol.

At first, the health workers performed various tests on the baby to rule out that he had the disease known as 'brittle bones', but the type of fractures led them to suspect that the injuries occurred "in a context of abuse." , according to the statement sent by the Police. By then, the final reports had already ruled out that the infant suffered from this pathology.

The doctors then began to consider the hypothesis that one of the parents was the perpetrator of the abuse as a result of shaken baby syndrome. Once the minor was treated, they sent a report of injuries and communicated the facts to the judicial authority and the Family and Women Unit (UFAM) of the National Police.

The judge decided to provisionally withdraw custody and parental rights from the parents and the UFAM began an investigation to clarify the facts.

Investigations indicate that the baby's injuries could have been caused by the parents, who have been arrested as alleged perpetrators of a crime of injuries in the family environment.
