Pablo Iglesias will open a bar in Lavapiés

"Taverns are the only bastion of freedom of the proletariat," coined philosopher Karl Kautsky. And Pablo Iglesias has been willing to contribute his grain of sand from his own in the Madrid neighborhood of Lavapiés. Specifically at number 8 Ave María Street, where next Tuesday the blinds of the Garibaldi tavern will be raised.

With a subtle nod to the Garibaldi Brigade that, full of Italians, participated in defense of the Second Republic during the Spanish Civil War, the founder of Podemos has joined forces with a poet -Sebastián Fiorilli- and a singer-songwriter -Carlos Ávila- to run a food and drink venue where cultural meetings, book presentations, poetry readings and, from time to time, an acoustic concert will also be held.

The Garibaldi tavern, whose gestation has been carried out with the utmost secrecy, begins its journey in the premises previously occupied by the gastrobar The Dinosaur was located there very close to the Spanish Film Archive. Just nine minutes walk from Puerta del Sol or the Congress of Deputies, in case any former Iglesias benchmate wanted to go there during one of the recesses of the Lower House.

Despite the latest tests that are still being carried out in a business registered on February 16, and registered in the Commercial Registry with a social equity of 3,100 euros, the Garibaldi tavern already has its food menu very advanced. In it you can find everything from salmorejo to cheeks, including enchiladas, sandwiches and toasts. Without forgetting the existence of a selection of vegan proposals.

The cocktails are not far behind since, under the suggestive quote of "Bacchus has drowned more names than Neptune" attributed to Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Marcos margarita, the Fidel mojito, the Ché daiquiri or the Gramsci negroni stand out.

Finally, the selection of drinks will have proposals for Chilean and Argentine wines, as well as Basque beers such as Keler or Bilbao, Victoria from Malaga, Catalan Estrella or Valencian Turia.

Iglesias thus expands his professional projects. Although this time, and with permission for the bar conversations that take place in the Garibaldi tavern, outside of politics and current affairs.
