Motivation and will, an art

One can only kneel before Novak Djokovic, whose game violates the laws of physics and psychiatry. That is why I have tried to reflect on his career. I want to learn something. And I have realized that he has handled two tools. On the one hand, motivation, and on the other, willpower that is now socially in the doldrums. He has known how to use both as a catapult to achieve his goals. Because, curiously, they are as different as they are complementary.

Motivation is the initial driving force of everything. Something that gives us enthusiasm and interest. And it can arise through both external and internal forces. The inspiration of a role model, the promise of a reward or the search for satisfaction or well-being. But motivation has a defect and that is that it ends up being ephemeral in time, influenced by external factors. Lack of results, stress or criticism from the environment end up being lethal for motivation. And let's not be stupid, everyone ends up finding their hell.

Willpower is the ability that allows us to remain focused on the objective and not alter course. And over time, and through habits, it ends up providing us with a discipline that will become more solid over time. Willpower grows over time while motivation fades. It is a no to laziness, it is an alliance with commitment, it is telling you: “I will not abandon you.”

The winning option is the combination of both. And for that, it is essential to generate the dynamics that guarantee its permanence, knowing that at a certain moment one or the other will be the main driving force. Watching Djokovic, I can think of several dynamics to establish.

Define clear objectives: this way, you divert the shot less. He's already talking about abandoning the No. 1 obsession and competing in Grand Slams. You strengthen willpower.

Find sources of inspiration: look for something in your environment that helps you. For example, references like Kobe Bryant. Also, have supportive communities by your side. The number of people who are in his box helping him is brutal. Everyone contributes to make it there. You strengthen motivation.

Establish a plan and routine: Habit makes everything easier because you can't live without it. And it turns out that it is what allows you to be on the right path. You strengthen willpower.

Self-discipline: in any match that brings you closer to hell, you have already learned to handle yourself. All of his reactions allow him to continue in the fight. Motivation and will.

Celebration: Celebrate even partial successes, because they unite the team and provide momentum, promoting motivation. The happiness of the environment is key.

How easy it is to theorize, let's see if I can get something.
