Mallorca surprises and beats Real Sociedad on penalties

Mallorca broke the odds and qualified for the Cup final, the fourth cup final in its history, after beating Real Sociedad on penalties at the Reale Arena in a very close match, with many inaccuracies and dribbling chances. Mallorca will face the winner of the second semi-final between Athletic Club and Atlético on Thursday at San Mamés on April 6 at La Cartuja in Seville.

The first half was very boring, with the two teams engaged in a silent fight in the center of the field, with possession going to Real Sociedad, but with Javier Aguirre's team well planted.

At Real Imanol Alguacil had just left eight starters on the bench in Vitoria. It was assumed that he was going to have a fresher team. He gave it very little in the first half. However, in the 44th minute a Zubimendi center hit Raíllo in the hand. Brais took the penalty very badly and Greif, the Slovakian goalkeeper, saved it.

In the 50th minute, in one of Mallorca's first counterattacks, a cross from Jaume Costa allowed a good header from Gio González that meant the score was 0-1 in the vermillions' first shot between the three sticks.

Alguacil put the limping Oyarzabal into action and he responded as soon as he left. In the 70th minute Zubimendi recovered a ball and Brais assisted Oyarzabal, who beat Greif to tie the game and the tie.

The game was left to Rea, who put the rival area close. Becker could have scored, but Greif prevented the goal with a great save. Jaume Costa was also able to score his team in the 88th minute in the final, but his shot went wide and the game went to extra time.

The extension began with controversy. Samu Costa took a shot from Tierney over the line and the VAR determined that the ball had not gone in completely. There wasn't much more and it went to penalties. In La Real the first Oyarzabal failed and that was decisive. Mallorca scored their five shots, ruined a possible Basque final and got into the final. It had been 21 years since the Balearic team had reached a Copa del Rey final.
