Police in the German city of Hamburg are carrying out a large deployment at a school in the Balnkenese district after receiving reports that two armed people had barricaded themselves in a classroom. According to police, two young men entered the building and threatened a teacher with a gun. “We know that at least they showed him the weapon,” explained police spokesman Holger Vehren at a press conference in front of the school.
Police officers and special forces, reinforced by at least one helicopter, have entered the school building to take charge of the situation. “At the moment, we are treating the case as a threatening situation,” said Vehren, while ensuring that for now there are no known injuries.
Meanwhile, emergency services have escorted the first students out of the school, the police have reported, to a safe place where they can meet their families.
Hamburg police have asked citizens to avoid the area both on foot and by transport, as adjacent streets have been closed.
