Madrid firefighters carried out 19,300 interventions in 2023, a record number

According to ASEM data112, the 9.6% decrease in people killed in accidents in which the action of these public servants has been required, represents 131 fatalities in 2023 compared to 145 in 2022.

Regarding the moments of greatest activity, with the passage of five storms between August and November, the DANA that affected Madrid during September 3 and 4 required the participation of firefighters on up to 584 occasions in towns in the southwest zone. , such as Villamanta, Aldea del Fresno or El Álamo.

The work consisted of rescuing people, searching for missing people, draining water in homes and helping to repair infrastructure, among others, says the press release.

Due to the effects of these rains, September was the month that required their presence the most, with 2,048 interventions, while February, with 1,257, the least. Technical assistance constituted 42.7% of the total, many of them motivated by storms, while fires represented 33.4% and rescues 16.9%.

Alcalá de Henares was the municipality that registered the highest number of actions, with 1,203, followed by the large towns in the south such as Getafe (1,101), Leganés (1,065) and Móstoles (1,053), whose municipal fire service was integrated into the regional body in November 2022.

The Special Drone Group (GED), incorporated into the Fire Department in September 2019, collaborated last year in 102 services, 64% more than in 2022, with the most numerous being industrial fires (34), followed by those that occurred in homes ( 14) and vegetation (12).

Firefighters drones also participated in eight searches for missing people in the natural environment, in three cases of water rescue, and in the search for missing people, location of vehicles swept away by water and assessment of material damage after the DANA in September.

The GED is made up of seven pilots and a responsible Chief Supervisor, who cover 24-hour shifts, 365 days a year.
