Last step to solve the problem of flooding in the Paral·lel area

The floods that from time to time, when episodes of intense rainfall occur, punish the surroundings of Paral·lel Avenue will come to a definitive solution with the construction of the new collector on Vila i Vilà Street, in Poble Sec. Works on the third phase of the drainage of the Paral·lel, the Sant Pau ring road and Vila i Vilà street will begin this coming Monday with the work prior to the installation of this collector.

The actions will affect the section between Palaudàries Street and Bella Dorita Square with the purpose of increasing the hydraulic capacity of the drainage network and, in this way, minimizing the flooding problems that occur in the lower part of the Ciutat district. Vella and in the Poble Sec neighborhood. These works give continuity to those that have been carried out for years. This, which begins on Monday, is the third phase of a project that covered the first in 2015 and completed the second phase in 2020.

The works will initially serve to divert the affected services and are expected to last until next year. The construction of the new collector will not be completed until mid-2026. This third phase of the process to improve the drainage of this flood-prone area of Barcelona has a budget of 18.85 million euros.

These works that are being carried out in the area around Paral·lel Avenue are part of the Comprehensive Sanitation Master Plan for the City of Barcelona (PDISBA), which aims to respond to the problems derived from the climate crisis. This plan was prepared based on the diagnosis of the current situation and the different scenarios that arise, taking into account everything from normal rainfall in the city to extraordinary phenomena with a return of more than 500 years.

The action planned for the next three years consists of building a new collector on the Llobregat side of Vila i Vilà street without affecting the existing collector, since the new one will be built in parallel. First, it will be necessary to build an earth retaining wall anchored to the existing collector, move the water, gas, etc. services, and build the pilot screen next to the buildings to contain the earth.

The works will entail traffic restrictions. Only one traffic lane will be left in Vila i Vilà, throughout the area of action and the service cordon on the Llobregat side of the street will also be affected.
