La Jonquera finalizes a new appeal against the Galatea wind farm project

The City Council of La Jonquera, in Alt Empordà (Girona) will present a new appeal against the Galatea wind farm project, which affects the municipality.

The decision has been fully agreed upon and comes after the appeal they presented against the resolution of the General Directorate of Energy of the Generalitat of Catalonia in which prior authorization of the project was granted to Enel Green Power Spain.

Having not received a response, they have decided to file an administrative dispute. "We consider that it is totally incompatible with the preservation of our natural environment and the future of our town," says the mayor, Míriam Lanero.

"We are exploring all available protection options, hoping to avoid the irreversible degradation of our territory," he adds.

The Galatea wind farm affects La Jonquera and the municipalities of Cantallops, Agullana, Capmany, Biure, Pont de Molins, Llers, Figueres and Vilafant, with 48.94 megawatts and nine wind turbines.

The General Directorate of Energy of the Generalitat of Catalonia granted prior authorization to the Galatea wind farm last August. Many of the affected municipalities have presented allegations against the project.

Apart from the two appeals presented, the City Council has suspended the licenses for the implementation of this type of infrastructure; has hired geologists, environmentalists and other professionals to evaluate the project's impact; has approved a Special Urban Planning Plan that regulates the conditions for installing wind farms on non-developable land; and has managed, together with other municipalities, for the Regional Council to declare the megalithic area as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest.

The city council is committed to carrying out all the actions within its power to prevent the construction of this wind farm. "The council intends to continue firmly and forcefully opposing the project, along with the rest of the city councils of the affected municipalities," the City Council said in a statement.
