Junts confirms the progress towards the official status of Catalan, but requests a date for final approval

Junts per Catalunya has assessed this Tuesday that although "progress has been made" for Catalan to become an official language in the European Union (EU), the acting central government "has to intensify diplomatic efforts" and has to be "aware" that it is "in injury time".

For this reason, in the training they consider that it is necessary to announce a date for the definitive approval of Catalan as an official language in the community institutions. "At Junts we will be attentive to news in the coming weeks," says Jordi Turull's team in a brief statement. The Government has made a similar statement and has warned that it will not accept anything other than the full official status of Catalan. "It is an issue of linguistic justice," said the spokesperson for Pere Aragonès' Executive, Patrícia Plaja.

From JxCat they have spoken this way after the meeting of the EU general affairs council that was held this Tuesday in Luxembourg. The acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, pointed out at the end of the meeting that the official status of Catalan in the EU "is closer" despite the "skepticism" of Latvia and Lithuania. After the previous appointment of that body, the party explicitly valued the efforts of Minister Albares through former president Carles Puigdemont. This time the line has been similar, but one more march is requested from the socialists.

In parallel, the post-convergents continue their negotiations with the PSOE for the possible investiture of Pedro Sánchez and were aware in advance that this Tuesday, although the matter was being discussed in the general affairs council of the EU, there would not be a vote and therefore there would be no more concreteness. That is why in the party, although they ask that deadlines be defined and a greater effort be made, they have chosen not to raise the tone excessively, taking into account the context of negotiations.

The Catalan officialdom, which had been on the table several times, is currently part of the agreement that Junts closed with the PSOE at the beginning of the legislature, for the constitution of the Congress Board. Míriam Nogueras' group did not confirm support for the socialist candidate to preside over the Lower House until they had confirmation in their hands that Albares had initiated the procedures in the community entity.

For its part, the Government has appreciated that there are countries that have shown themselves in favor of the recognition of Catalan and has celebrated that "there are no vetoes", despite the contrary and public position of Latvia and Lithuania. Of course, like Junts, the Catalan Cabinet has noted progress, but has regretted that the steps taken have still "not borne the fruits" it expected.
