Home mortgages start the year with more setbacks

The granting of mortgages for housing experienced a new setback in January, although the fall is moderating, according to statistics from the College of Registrars published this Tuesday. Loans established fell 13.7% at the beginning of the year, the smallest drop since March 2023 and a slight improvement from the declines in previous months.

The increase in the cost of loans due to the increase in interest rates and the Euribor, as well as prices that do not slow down, lead Spaniards to think twice about the idea of buying a home with financing. So much so that since January 2023 there has not been an increase in the year-on-year comparison, with a negative streak that has already extended for an entire year.

Only two autonomous regions registered more mortgages than last year: Extremadura, where they grew by 9.3% to 1,413 granted, and Aragón, with a rise of 3% and 709 granted. On the opposite side, the biggest declines were experienced by Asturias, with a drop of more than 30% and 488 mortgages, and Navarra, with a cut of 21% and 318 mortgages.

In the most populated ones, more descents. In Andalusia, where they are granted the most, they fall 20%, to 5,922; In Catalonia, with 5,858, the decrease is 14%, while in the Community of Madrid they fell 11%, to 4,620.
