Health alert: sausages from an Andalusian company contaminated by Listeria

Health alert due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in meat products from the Industrias Cárnicas Sierra Nevada brand located in the town of Cájar (Granada). The Junta de Andalucía has informed the Spanish Food Safety Agency (Aesan) that in the health controls carried out they have detected the presence of this bacteria in several Iberian sausages marketed by the aforementioned company and that have been distributed in the provinces of Córdoba, Granada , Malaga and Seville, as well as in an establishment located in the Balearic Islands (apparently, only the Iberian salchichón).

Health authorities recommend that people who have this brand's products at home check the batches (see below) and refrain from consuming it.

Listeriosis is a serious infection usually caused by eating foods contaminated with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. From Aesan they remember that in healthy people, Listeria monocytogenes infection is generally asymptomatic or presents with mild gastrointestinal symptoms, fever and muscle pain.

However, in certain risk groups, such as immunosuppressed people, the elderly, young children and pregnant women, more serious symptoms may occur. "If you have consumed these specific products and batches" affected by this alert and present any symptoms compatible with Listeriosis, it is recommended to go to your health center.

The incubation period is usually 1 or 2 weeks, but can range from a few days to 3 months. This makes it sometimes difficult to identify the food that is the source of the infection.

The contaminated and recalled products are:

Iberian Fuet: Lot L3023 and expiration date 06/09/2023.

Iberian salchichón: Lot L1223 and expiration date 03/22/2024

Likewise, the following products have also been marketed with a risk of the presence of listeria in them:

Iberian chorizo: Lots L0723 and L0923 and all the expiration dates of these lots.

Mini Iberian Fuet: Lot L2223 and all the expiration dates of this lot.

Spicy Vela Chorizo: Lot L2623 and all expiration dates for this lot.

Pork cheese: Lot L2223, 2523, 2623, 2823, 2923 and 3023 and all expiration dates.

Of these last products, it is not ruled out that there is distribution to other provinces, according to the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs of Andalusia.

During 2020, there were 1,876 cases of listeriosis in humans in the European Union. The listeriosis trend has remained stable during the period 2016-2020. 16 outbreaks were reported in the EU.

In Spain, since 2015, listeriosis is a notifiable disease. Outbreaks are difficult to investigate, due to the long incubation period of listeriosis (5-70 days), which makes it difficult to study the foods consumed by patients. In 2020, 191 cases of listeriosis have been confirmed.
