Haiti regains calm after 48 hours of panic spread by armed gangs

After two days of violence in Haiti, an atmosphere of tense calm flooded the capital and the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince on Saturday, amid fears that the armed incidents that have kept the population terrified since last Thursday will be repeated.

In the previous two days, around twenty people were injured and six police officers were murdered by armed gangs in Canaan (north of the Haitian capital) during an attack on the Bon Repos sub-police station on Thursday, according to data from the Police Union.

Faced with these acts, the Haitian National Police is willing to fight to solve the problem of insecurity in the country, where demonstrations are taking place to demand the departure from power of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

Protesters and armed gangs agree on the objective of removing the prime minister from power and, as Jimmy Chérizier, alias Barbecue, self-proclaimed leader of the coalition of armed groups known as Vivre Ensemble, stated this Friday, the police are not their objective, but rather “ “They fight a battle to liberate the country.”

In this context of violence, thousands of families continue to flee from areas controlled by armed gangs and the number of refugees increases. Also, according to local media, chaos reigns in the General Hospital of Port-au-Prince due to the tension that exists in its proximity, so both patients and professionals have fled the facilities these days.

This new increase in tension represents another step in the difficult situation that Haiti has been going through for years, aggravated after the assassination in 2021 of President Jovenel Moise and which has the country plunged into an acute social, political and economic crisis and under terror. imposed by armed gangs with their killings, kidnappings, rapes and attacks.
