Girona loses more than 14,000 jobs in September due to the end of the tourist season

The Girona labor market closes September with a strong shake as a result of the end of the tourist season. According to Social Security affiliation data, more than 14,000 jobs have been lost in the district this month alone.

It is the highest drop in all of Catalonia and denotes the dependence of the territory's economy on tourism and services. Transferred in percentages, during September alone membership has decreased by 3.73% in the Girona regions and is back to more or less the levels of May.

On the contrary, unemployment has remained practically unchanged, and has even decreased slightly, with only ten fewer unemployed. In the district, there are now 29,822 people looking for employment.

After two months of rising, unemployment closes September with an almost imperceptible drop. During this month, there were ten people who left the lists, which represents a tiny decrease of 0.03%, but which is nevertheless in line with that of the rest of Catalonia (because in Lleida it was 0.07%, in Tarragona 0.30% and only in Barcelona has it been above 1%).

Right now, in the district there are 29,822 people looking for employment. Compared to a year ago, it is still below the records of September 2022 (because then there were 10% more unemployed in the Girona regions).

By sector, as is usual, the vast majority of those on the lists are service workers (including commerce and hospitality). Specifically, in the Girona regions there are 20,717 unemployed in the tertiary sector, followed by 3,441 in industry, 2,795 in construction and 643 in agriculture. Finally, there are 2,226 unemployed people who do not have any previous work.

But although unemployment has remained unchanged, what changes - a lot - is affiliation to Social Security, a thermometer that is used to see job creation.

It is a significant decrease, which translated into percentages represents a drop of 3.73%, evidencing the dependence that Girona's economy has on tourism.
